Boho chic is back for spring 2025, and Chloé started it

Boho chic returned to the spring 2025 runways with one clear author. Chemena Kamali took over Chloé in October 2023 and showed her first collection in Paris on February 29, 2024: ruffles, long skirts, piles of accessories. Vogue's review called it "all boho ruffles."

Sienna Miller sat in the front row. Her furry gilet and floaty skirt at Glastonbury in 2004 made the look famous the first time. Twenty years later she was watching her old wardrobe walk past.

Suede showed up at Chloé and Prada in the same week

At Chloé's spring 2025 show on September 26, 2024, the jackets came in sturdy workwear cotton, in soft suede and in leather. A week earlier at Prada, Vogue noted "a folk singer's brown suede coat." Two houses, one season, same material.

Suede works here because its nap swallows light. It reads as worn-in even when new, which is what the boho look wants. It also hates rain. More on that below.

What to buy: a suede jacket, a long skirt, a fringed bag

  • Suede jacket or coat. Tobacco brown or camel. Knee length if you want it to carry a whole outfit.
  • A long skirt that moves. Printed or plain, hem at the ankle.
  • Fringe and a wide belt. The hobo bag and coin belt from 2005 are back. Wear one, not all.

Colours: earth tones, then one hit of rust

  • Earth tones do most of the work: brown, caramel, olive. About seventy percent of the outfit.
  • Warm neutrals for air: cream, beige, light khaki.
  • One accent: rust or deep orange, usually the bag or the shoes.

The lesson from 2005: don't let it turn into fast fashion

By January 2007 British Vogue was writing "no more boho chic, no more gilets." Jane Shepherdson, then at Topshop, said that when Sienna wore that gilet they had to pull theirs forward fast. The look burned out in about two years.

If you want this round to last, buy one good suede jacket and stop. Simple cut, no hardware, a neutral colour. With a long skirt it is boho. With straight jeans it is just a good jacket.
