How to wear yellow: admit it's hard, then use three depths

Yellow is the colour most people leave out of the wardrobe, and the numbers back that up. In a survey run in 2000, only 6% of Europeans and Americans named yellow their favourite colour. It is also the colour the eye picks out fastest at a distance, which is why school buses and warning signs use it.

Unloved and loud at once. Worn badly, the whole outfit becomes about the yellow. The fix is to treat it as three separate colours.

Vanilla yellow: the easy one

Vanilla is yellow with most of the saturation drained out, close to cream. It is kind to almost every skin tone and sits quietly next to the white and grey you already own. Knitwear and shirts in vanilla are the safest first purchase.

Saffron yellow: one piece, then stop

Saffron leans orange and carries weight. The dye's history explains why: it takes about 150 crocus flowers to yield a single gram of stigma, and after the Buddha's death his followers made it the colour of monks' robes. Fragonard's A Young Girl Reading, painted around 1776, is a saffron dress from top to hem.

Wear it as one piece, a dress or a coat, with everything else in black or navy.

Mustard yellow: the autumn yellow

Mustard is darker and greener. The word only entered English as a colour name in 1886. It looks older than the other two, so it pairs better with corduroy and tweed than with silk. Scarves and coats are where it usually lives.

How to wear yellow: a vanilla knit against neutrals

Three pairings and one rule

  • Tone on tone. A vanilla top under a mustard coat, one hue in two depths.
  • Opposites. Yellow with purple or blue, straight across the colour wheel.
  • Neutrals underneath. White, grey, beige or navy, with yellow limited to one garment.

The rule: the stronger the yellow, the less of it. Saturation and surface area move in opposite directions.

Cool or warm skin

Cool undertones take greener yellows, lemon and mustard. Warm undertones take orange yellows, saffron and honey. Hold the fabric against the inside of your wrist. If the skin goes grey, put it back.

Yellow's easiest neighbour is brown. We covered the earth-tone palette in the boho chic revival for spring 2025.

Care: sun and colour transfer

Keep yellow out of direct sun for long stretches, use a neutral detergent, and wash pale yellows alone the first few times. Fading is the smaller risk. Picking up grey from everything else in the drum is the bigger one.
