How to wear sequins in the daytime: the runway went first

How to wear sequins in the daytime has one real obstacle: by default they belong to the night. The runway has already moved them. At Prada's spring 2025 show in Milan on September 19, 2024, a silver sequin dress went under a yellow windbreaker, with a UFO-shaped straw visor on top. Vogue's Nicole Phelps asked, "What's stopping any of us?"

Her review also noted fashion "succumbing to quiet luxury blandness." Sequins over a sportswear base was Prada's answer to that.

Rabanne: silver discs on a blazer lapel

In Paris on September 25, 2024, Julien Dossena set out to build what Vogue called an everyday Rabanne wardrobe. A blazer's lapels were embroidered all over with tiny silver discs. A sparkly top of geometric panels linked by metal chains was worn with beaded basketball shorts. Basics were finished in silver foil.

Paco Rabanne founded the house in 1966 with a debut titled "Manifesto: 12 unwearable dresses in contemporary materials," made of metal, paper, plastic. Sixty years on, the same house is stitching discs onto a blazer. From unwearable to everyday is the whole arc of daytime sequins. For the material's own history, see sequin history.

Formula one: neutrals around a single sparkle

Let the sequin piece be the only highlight and keep everything else neutral.

  • sequin skirt, gray turtleneck knit, flat shoes
  • sequin top, straight jeans, a coat

Prada ran the same logic and swapped the neutral for a yellow windbreaker.

Formula two: one piece, no more

You don't need to shine head to toe. One sequin garment, or just one sequined accessory, does the job.

  • a plain suit with a sequin clutch
  • a basic knit with sequin earrings

Rabanne's lapels are the extreme version: sequins on one small part of one garment.

Daytime sequins: a royal blue sequin slip dress with matching blue boots

Formula three: quiet colors, matte fabric beside them

Champagne, silver-gray, misty blue cross into daylight more easily than saturated colors. Put wool, cotton or denim next to them so the matte surface holds the shine down. Keep the cut simple and let the fabric do the sparkling.

Diotima's spring 2025 show in New York on September 10, 2024, is the reference here. Rachel Scott melted metallic paillettes and used them to edge a linen wrap skirt, worn with a very thin striped turtleneck. Sequins on the hem only; everything else was a normal Tuesday.

Which stitching survives a workday

Sequins are sewn two ways. Stitched flat, they don't move, rarely fall off, and reflect quietly, which is what you want for daily wear. Stitched at one point, they dangle, move with you and catch more light, which is what you want at night. As for material, vinyl replaced the earlier gelatin and clear plastic on durability and cost, and most everyday sequins sold today are vinyl.

Washing

Turn the piece inside out and hand wash it, or use a laundry bag. Dry flat, away from heat and direct sun. Store it apart from rough fabrics.
