What resort 2027 is, and why the season matters

Resort 2027, also sold as cruise or pre-spring, is the third season that sits between spring and fall, outside the fashion week calendar. Vogue's Laird Borrelli-Persson set out its position in her 18 June trend report. The shows are quieter than spring or fall, but the clothes sit in stores and online longer than anything else, so they have to work harder.

Monica Paolini of the New York label Sea described her resort 2027 collection as "a practical and romantic approach to everyday clothes." Vogue took that line as the mood of the whole season.

The little black dress at 100: Chanel's opening look

Chanel's show opened with Matthieu Blazy's take on the little black dress. In 1926 Vogue called Chanel's version "the Ford" of fashion, meaning everyone would eventually own one, the way they'd own a Model T. That was exactly a century ago.

Drop-waist dresses from the same decade came back with it. So did a related trick for lengthening the torso: a deep yoke, the panel across shoulders and chest, that carries the waist lower before releasing into a full skirt.

Moiré, ponyhair and rosettes: a season about materials

Vogue's read is that resort 2027 mostly skipped narrative and put its energy into fabric. At The Row, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen remade a trench coat in moiré. Elsewhere animal patterns (tiger, cheetah, zebra) landed on ponyhair and flocked surfaces you'd want to pet.

Silk and chiffon rosettes pointed back to Paul Poiret and Boué Soeurs in the 1920s. Ruched, close-fitting gowns picked up the long line of Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich in the 1930s. At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière drew on Gilded Age ornament.

Carpenter pants, shirts, bandeaus: the resort 2027 pieces you can wear now

  • Carpenter pants. Reinforced knees, the occasional hammer loop. Vogue's suggestion for anyone not ready for a fashion apron.
  • Button-down shirts. The dressier cousin of the plain tee. Balenciaga turned them sculptural with drawstrings.
  • Bandeaus and exposed bras. For women and men. Vogue noted the timing next to Madonna's new album and left the question open.
  • Western. A "go West" thread that reads as a nod to America's 250th birthday.

Colour ran sour or sweet, pastel or saturated, in combinations you wouldn't have predicted. Jewels appeared as decoration and sometimes as the garment itself.
