Pantone Color of the Year 2026: Cloud Dancer is the program's first white

Pantone's Color of the Year for 2026 is Cloud Dancer, Pantone 11-4201, a white. Vogue published the announcement on December 4, 2025, under Laia Garcia-Furtado's byline, and the headline called it "a natural white." Run down every pick since Cerulean in 2000 and no white appears before this one.

How Pantone describes it

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, called it "a lofty white that reads like a breath of fresh air and is imbued with a feeling of serenity." Laurie Pressman, the institute's vice president, drew the boundary: "It's not a stark white, it's specifically a natural shade of white." Her reason was plainer: "We've been overcommitted, we're overstimulated. And we want relief."

Where it sits in the table

Year Color of the Year Code
2000 Cerulean 15-4020
2006 Sand Dollar 13-1106
2021 Ultimate Gray + Illuminating 17-5104 / 13-0647
2024 Peach Fuzz 13-1023
2025 Mocha Mousse 17-1230
2026 Cloud Dancer 11-4201

Only two entries in the table are relatives: the pale beige of 2006 and the gray of 2021, when Pantone paired a gray with a bright yellow. 2016 was also a pair. Every other year has a clear hue. Cloud Dancer jumps from the warm brown of 2025 to the lightest end of the swatch book.

The selection process is worth knowing too. Twice a year Pantone gathers representatives of national color standards groups for a closed meeting in a European capital. Two days of presentations and debate, then one color.

The runways got there first

Vogue's announcement listed about twenty spring 2026 shows with looks in this white, among them Jil Sander, Alaïa, Celine, Bottega Veneta, Dior, Calvin Klein, Balenciaga. Jil Sander was first on the list.

That show was in Milan on September 24, 2025, Simone Bellotti's debut for the house. Guinevere Van Seenus opened it in a white A-line skirt built with inverse darting so the volume read as subtle geometry, which Bellotti called "modern armature." White plus structure is how the color works on a runway.

Why white is hard: it hides nothing

White is the most demanding base color. Cut, cloth, stitching: all of it is exposed, and one loose seam undoes the whole outfit. Three things make it work:

  • Same color, different cloth. Knit over poplin over wool: the sheen and weight differ, and the layers show.
  • Let the cut talk. With a quiet color the shape has to say something. Drop shoulders and straight legs read more current than fitted.
  • One accessory to finish. A leather belt or a piece of metal jewelry pulls an all-white outfit back from loungewear.

For the full off-white outfit, including neighboring shades, see off-white styling. It runs on the same logic as Morandi color formulas: even out the grayness, let texture talk.

The other color of the year: WGSN

Pantone isn't the only body naming a color of the year. WGSN and Coloro announce theirs about two years ahead for the trade, and the two systems are unrelated. WGSN's pick for 2027 is a bright blue; see Luminous Blue.
