When high summer arrives, the wardrobe needs a shoe that works with dresses, linen trousers, and holiday looks. The espadrille is almost the default answer for that slot: a canvas upper, a woven rope sole, and an inborn Mediterranean ease. Yet this seemingly casual shoe has nearly seven centuries of documented history.

It Began on the Feet of Peasants

The espadrille comes from Spain, with deep historical ties to the regions of Catalonia, Aragon, and the Basque Country. Its name derives from the Catalan espardenya, pointing to a tough Mediterranean grass — esparto — the material first used to weave the soles.

Every summer, the wardrobe remembers linen. With its natural creases, coarse texture, and a hint of ease, it is almost the default language of the season. Yet this seemingly casual fabric holds one of humankind's oldest textile histories.

A Cloth That Spans Tens of Thousands of Years

Linen is woven from the bast fibers of the flax plant. In a cave in Georgia (the South Caucasus), archaeologists found dyed wild flax fibers dating back around 30,000 years — considered some of the earliest evidence of humans using linen-like fabrics.

In ancient Egypt, white linen was both everyday clothing and the material for mummy wrappings and priests' garments, regarded as a symbol of purity and light. The Tarkhan dress, considered among the oldest woven garments in the world, is made of linen.

Why It Is Born for Summer

Linen's coolness is no illusion; it has a physical basis:

• High thermal conductivity: linen feels cool to the touch precisely because it conducts heat well, carrying warmth away from the skin.
• Strong and absorbent: flax fibers are very strong, highly absorbent, and dry faster than cotton, which makes wearing it more comfortable in the heat.

Linen's preciousness owes much to its laborious making. To get long, soft fibers, the flax is pulled up whole or cut close to the root, dried, then put through a series of steps:

Fashion keeps an unwritten calendar: the first Monday in May is the Met Gala. In 2026, that day fell on May 4. The just-passed Spring 2026 couture season once again pulled fashion back to its oldest, most hand-made side: no mass production here, only pieces made by hand, at great expense of time, for specific individuals.

"Haute Couture" Is Not an Adjective but a Protected Title

Many assume any lavish, expensive gown can be called couture. Not so. In France, "haute couture" is a legally protected designation, governed by the Paris-based Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, and only houses meeting strict conditions may bear the label.

Those conditions have historically included: made-to-measure work for private clients, an atelier of a certain size in Paris, and the presentation each season of a required number of hand-made looks in Paris. In other words, couture is a set of rules about how it's made — not merely about looking expensive.

Where the Hours Go

A couture piece can take hundreds of hours, and that time settles into places you never see:

• Draping: shaping the silhouette inch by inch on a form with muslin, adjusted again and again.
• Embroidery and beadwork: the most time-consuming stage, with thousands of beads, sequins, and feathers applied by hand, one stitch at a time.

Rule One: Build Layers with Fabric

By late February, the busiest stretch of the fashion calendar begins again — the women's Fall/Winter 2026-27 ready-to-wear collections are shown in concentrated succession. It isn't a single show but an entire system spanning several weeks and four cities, known in the industry as "Fashion Month."

Four Fixed Cities, in a Fixed Order

The "Big Four" women's ready-to-wear weeks run in a stable sequence: New York → London → Milan → Paris. That order has barely changed in decades, and it lets buyers and press follow along, moving from one city to the next.

• New York: commercial, wearable, with a sportswear gene.
• London: experimental and emerging, with a strong art-school spirit.
• Milan: Italian craftsmanship and mastery of leather.
• Paris: the grand finale, home to the most historic houses.

Within a year, ready-to-wear splits into two seasons: Spring/Summer collections are shown around September–October of the previous year, and Fall/Winter in February–March of the following year. In other words, what you see in February is what you'll wear the coming autumn and winter.
